Greer

I was surprised to see that I caught this helicopter carrying water to hot spots on the other side of the mountain. Don't know why the picture is so dark.

This was the Historic Greer Lodge that burned to the ground a month before the Wallow Fire. It was arson. But you can also see the chard mountain in the back ground

Burned spots on the side of the road at the end of the Town and the beautiful lodges on the opposite side of the road.

If you look closely you can see the roof of a cabin, the fire stopped just beyond that point.

In this photo you can see the burn line right behind this cabin

This picture speaks for itself

We stopped and had lunch here at the Rendezvous. The owner kept her business open to feed the Fire Fighters as long as she could stay and use up the food. They did this for free. She said it was make good use of the food or have it rot.

Across the street from the restaurant

I don't know how much or how long it will take for the trees to grown back.

It was said that depending on how hot the fire got would determine the damage to the soil.

You would think people would learn but that is wishful thinking. Also when the people in charge of these forests see how dry it is why do they not close the campgrounds before this happens. This fire happened in the windiest and driest time of the year.

  1. One of the problems that repeats itself is the forest service trying to manage mother nature. A burn cycle is necessary to ensure a healthy forest and no matter what man does mother nature will triumph. I grew up watching a similar situation as man tried to control the Mississippi river. It just doesn't work and sometimes mans efforts make things worse.

  2. I'm so sad to hear bout the Greer Lodge burning. It was a landmark. The owners of that cabin must feel very lucky that the fire stopped when it did. I read in the Flagstaff paper about the owners of the Rendevousz feeding the firefighters. Thanks for the pictures.

  3. Hi Shoeless, Yes mother nature will always win. And if they want to manage something then close down the campgrounds when the winds are high and the trees are dry. People cannot compete with her.

Hi Granny, I took some awesome pictures of the Lodge last year and then to pull up to it now and see nothing but burned and chard remains is sad. Some people are just plain thoughtless and mean.

    Have a great day friends

  4. A fire now and then is nature's way of weeding out things!

Sad to hear about the lodge. Always sad when a place of historical significance is destroyed, especially when it is done out of meanness!

  5. Hi Jim my friend, If mother nature had something to do with the fire you could understand better. But when a fool doesn't take precautions with camping and cause this thats another story. But I guess thats life.

  6. Hey Nana,

You got really good pictures. I know it seems silly, but that's cool you even got the helicopter taking the water.
That little cabin right in front of that burn line, WOW, did they get super lucky. That's amazing. Did you know about it, or just happened to spot it? What a relief it didn't catch the cabin.
That was really nice of the owners from the diner. A lot of people aren't that generous, but that's really considerate of them. Some people still do have really good hearts out there.
Anyways you have a great eye and way with pictures. Sad to see all the burned areas there, but glad it's passed

    Love ya,
    Mandy

  7. Hi Princess,
I didn't know what to expect when I got there. I just drove around and went down some side roads and found the cabin. I not sure but I think there may have been some out buildings that were lost.
Thanks for reading today. I will post other pictures from yesterday.
    Love you Nana
