Little Critters

Yep it was hot again very hot. Guess I need to get used to it and just shut up about it.

I am really enjoying going out on the porch with my coffee and Kindle in the morning. Can sit out there until around 9:30 - 10 am.

I ordered some supplies for the Neighborhood Watch today and delivered a File of Life packet to a new resident.

Then it was time to close up the house and settle in. Put up a Cheesy, green chili and mushroom Chicken recipe. I forgot to take a picture before I put it in the freezer.

While I was sitting at the computer I heard some strange bird calls very close by I just waited to long to look out the window but did get some pictures.
There was about 10 of these little guys sitting in my driveway. They still had a little of their downy feathers.
I slowly raised the blind but the parents are sharp and called them to order and ran across the street.
They ran under this palm but the lady that lives there was pulling out and off they ran again. I don't think these little guys were enjoying the heat much

Good Night All

  1. We are busy counting quail babies. Quite the swarm. Since the fire in Sedona we have rock pigeons here that never bothered to stop by before. Who knew?

    1. Hi JMD,

I know I replied to this and now it's gone. Oh well.
There are so many this year i love them and there are large numbers in the family. I hope they all make it this year.

As for the rock doves there dirty and nasty. I had to stop feeding the bird because there was more an more and then the other doves came too. They make such a nasty mess.

  2. They are so much fun to watch, they way they scurry around on the ground like they don't have wings.

    1. Good morning John,

They are really funny. When they run it reminds me of those wind things that spin the legs in circles.

    1. Hi Teri,

This recipe is very easy. ! can 98% fat free cream of chicken soup, 1/2 small can of diced green chili, 1/2 can or fresh mushrooms and grated Romano cheese or cheese of your choice. It can be made in the oven covered with foil or in the crock pot as I made it.

  4. Baby quails are great to watch. My Mon down in Green Valley had 13 of them this year in her fenced in yard.

    1. Hello Ryan,

Seems to be a good year for them. I love watching them too.

  5. The quails are so cute, Jo! Were the parents any where around? I guess with some of the tumultuous weather some are experiencing, we can't complain too much about the heat. I'm with you, though, I hate it, too. I used to love early morning coffee sitting outside our motorhome. Somehow tastes better as the sun comes up.

    1. Hi Nancy,

Yes one will always be watching at the highest point and the mom is always with the chicks. He will sound the alarm if he senses danger and off they run.

I love coffee out in the early morning when camping too. But this is working until about 10 am then it's hiding in the house after that.

  6. I do like to watch the critters, but my cats catch them too easily if they get the opportunity, so the birds keep their distance.

    1. Hi Jim,

2 yrs in a row cats got the moms so that killed off the babies. It's so sad. We seem to have the cat problem under control now.

  7. What cute little birds! It looks like they have a crest on their heads. I'm not sure I would know a quail if I saw one.

    1. Hi Gypsy,

These are Gamble's Quail. I love hearing them calling to their little family or their mate, it's mostly in the early morning. The feathers stand straight up on the top of their heads, The male is darker in color and there plume is black the female is lighter in color and her plume is smaller and more of a lighter brown.

  8. They are adorable! Many birds love to have water around especially during the heat, you can probably enjoy lots of birds just by putting out water for them. The Raccoons are trying my nerves again on the feeders!

  9. Hi Sondra,

I have a fountain and a birthbath out there and it is always full of visitors.. At least we don't have raccoons here but lots of other things.

  10. What a sweet surprise outside your window. Makes staying inside out of the heat not so bad, right? :)
