The Bed!!, The Bed!!

Yes I am excited!!

Today my friend Lucy brought over the bed frame. We quickly put it in the truck. Perfect fit.

Now we really got busy. I brought out the saw horses and we carried out the plywood I have had in the shed for years. Lucy took the measurements and cut the wood to fit the frame. Once this was done I carried them to the truck and got them in place. Next was to screw them to the frame. Lucy first drilled pilot holes and then used the longer sheet rock screws. Done.

Either tomorrow or Monday I will buy the foam for the mattress and get that cut down to fit.  I need to get some twin sheets at a second hand store and sew them to fit, also need a mattress pad.

Then as a added bonus she made 5 Artic Ice tubes. Lucy found the directions for making them on line they called them Polar Bear Tubes. These are made of PVC pipe and end caps. Measure the interior of you ice chest and cut the tubes to fit, remember the end caps have to be counted for the length. Glue one side with pipe dope wait for it to completely dry. Then fill 90 % of the way with water. Then glue the other end closed. Freeze them and you have the best way to keep your cooler cold and food stays dry. If you keep the inside clean this water can be used in an emergency if needed.

These are what the tubes look like. Someone asked me how long they last, this I cannot answer as I have never used them before.

I have more room now between the bed and the wheel well on the right side

There is room for one more storage bin under there and Fred's bed. Fred loves hidey holes and I bet he will run right to the end spot under the bed. We made sure to have the space for him
I will take more pictures when the job is done. Hope to get out the week after next.

Good Night All

  3. Wish I knew about those Artic Ice cubes before I accidentally dropped my camera in a ice chest of melted ice and found it 4 hours later.

  4. Am so excited for you, great idea for bed and ice tubes. Do you have a step to get inside or some kind of bumper extension step (or kind of crawl inside)? I need help to get into the back end of my truck.

    1. Hi Emily,
Glad you like it. I use a step ladder to get in n out. Those bumper extension steps are so expensive even used ones are way out of my budget. I use the metal ladders with the top handle.

  5. SO exciting!!! It looks like a Great JOB! And a great tip on the cooler tubes.
What about an air mattress for your cot, much more comfort than foam,,,,Walmart has twin inflatables, in store or online. I have a coleman inflatable and it is awesome...I bought the simple hand pump to inflate with.
can't wait to see where you go! Fred is a lucky pup to have his own little corner.

    1. Hi Sondra,

Lucy sure did do a good job. Glad you like it. I wonder if the air mattress would be to big for the bed. I'll have to take the measurements and check. I think it would be much more comfortable. I had a brand new one in the shed and when those little rat bastads broke in they took it and the battery powered pump. Can't wait to go.

  6. What a great idea with the arctic ice. No, make that brilliant. So glad your camper is coming together so nicely. I think you are going to be very comfortable, and no HITCHING, TOWING, and UNHITCHING! I look forward to checking on your next adventures. Pats to Fred. I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to be physically able to get out there. I had such high hopes with that first ablation; now the pain in the upper back and the fall..I'm not throwing in the towel, yet. It's so frustrating to want to do do everything as the golden years start to close down and not be able. I wish you many miles and many happy memories in your new truck camper.

  7. Hi Nancy,

Sorry to hear this treatment didn't go as well as the first one. But slow and easy might just work for you. Just talked about this the other night with my grand kids. My brain says I'm still young, But how the body says NO, but I will still keep trying.

  9. Hi Ryan,

Nice to hear from you. Thanks. Im hoping to do a few days at Madera next week and give those tubes and the bed trial run.
Your blog was mentioned in a group I belong to when someone was talking about looking for land up in Show Low or the surrounding area. Hope all is going well for you

  10. Is there no condensation on the outside of the Arctic Tubes? If not, that would be really great. How many do you use in a cooler? A layer of Reflectix lining your cooler will make a HUGE difference!

    Virtual hugs,

    Judie

  11. I love your set-up and what a great idea on those polar bear tubes.

Can hardly wait to see how they work out for you and maybe I can borrow your idea for my trips to Terlingua.
